Born as Jorge Mario Bergoglio in BuenosĀ Aires, Argentina, he was ordained as a priest in 1969 andĀ became Archbishop of Buenos Aires in 1998. In 2001 heĀ was named a CardinalĀ and eventuallyĀ the first Jesuit pope.
He's also the firstĀ Pope from the Americas or the SouthernĀ HemisphereĀ and the first Pope namedĀ Francis. He selected the name after St. FrancisĀ of Assisi, because of his special care andĀ concern for the poor. Heās shown this time andĀ again as heās chosen more simple living andĀ transportation methods than popes from theĀ recent past.
